“Trust & Obey” by Done Moen
When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way! While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there's no other way To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
One of the greatest fears a person can have is to put their complete trust in something or someone. Trust implies vulnerability and a willingness to give control.
As children of God, we are faced with this dilemma. Do we live in a constant state of trust or do we waver along and do things our own way.
Obedience is crucial toward a strong relationship with God. Churches who obey God are in the perfect position to make a great impact in the kingdom of God.
READ JOHN 14:15-26
This passage is cut and dry. If we know and love God, we will seek to obey His commands in our life. We won’t neglect His call but look to His law knowing that it has been put in place for our safety and well-being.
As the people of God who are moved by the Holy Spirit as God’s Divine Children, what are God’s promises whenever we are obedient?

1. A Counselor of Truth.

“If you love me, you will keep my commands.”
“keep” (tereo) - observe; guard; watch over
Those who love God understand that His commandments are not suggestions for the church to follow. They are far deeper. God’s commandments are in place so that His people can live in harmony with Him.
There is so much history in the scriptures involving obedience with God’s people.
Before and after Jesus. His commandments are just as vital today as they were before Jesus died on the cross.
The Counselor - The Holy Spirit
(parakeltos), advocate; helper; intercessor
legal assistant.
The Spirit of truth would be there to provide heavenly assistance.
“spirit” - wind, breath
Speak with sincerity and integrity.
While Jesus was set to leave the earth physically, He wanted the disciples to be aware of the helper He would be sending their way who would make their straight.
If they would obey God, they would not have to wonder where the next step would be.
Any time you watch a television program or movie involving a person who is going to be questioned, what does the lawyer always say after he or she is called? “Don’t say anything until I get there!”
You are not meant to walk through this life and the various situations with half a plan or without representation.
We are called to access the Holy Spirit in our life daily in every circumstance.
We need the Holy Spirit to council us in issues with:
Our self
Others
Sin
Every situation.
Your obedience to God sets the framework for Holy Spirit’s ability to help you through life’s situations.

2. Obedience is an Expression of Love.

The disciples were experiencing the fear of losing Jesus and having no direction in life. His presence was important. They were unsettled at the thought of losing hope without Him.
Orphan - a child without a parent.
While the world would not see Jesus physically, the disciples would still have the same presence in their life.
“I’m not leaving you.”
“I’m alive and I will be with every day.”
Love for Jesus was not merely sentimental, but is expressed by his followers when they obey His father.
Responding to all he taught, with faith and obedience.
A teacher has one of the greatest opportunities to make an impact on a life. A teacher who can gain the love of a student can gain their attention in ways few can. “I don’t want to let _________ down so I will listen to them.”
Biblically, God’s basis for worship and relationship is based in our obedience to Him.
A read through Genesis-Deuteronomy will show you repetitively that God blesses the obedient and curses the disobedient.
Obedience is the most practical way of establishing the trust connection between man and God.
Those who obey are in perfect position to be taught.
Romans 12:1-2 - 1 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. “
(PASS OUT LIST OF VERSES THAT TEACH ON OBEDIENCE.)
God won’t force you to obey Him. You can continue to do things your way if you want to. He invites worshippers to come to Him to be transformed. You can say yes or no. There are no gimmicks. You either love Him or you don’t.
God promises to make His ways known to the obedient. The ways of God, the Kingdom, and His mission in this world.

3. Obedience is Spirit-Led.

Judas was confused that the world would not be able to understand Jesus.
Irony.
Jesus continued with His message of obedience.
“If you love me, you will obey. Those who obey will receive the Father’s presence in their life.”
“If you don’t love me, you won’t obey.”
Jesus did leave the disciples out in the dark. No surprises.
This message wouldn’t end at Jesus’ time on earth. The “Counselor, the Holy Spirit”, sent by the Father would teach the disciples all things and remind them of everything taught by Jesus.
We see God’s hand on the lives of the obedient.
Dad’s advice to me when I went to work at the Oil Pit. “Show up on time, do what you’re told, and don’t complain.” Some of the best advice I’ve ever been given.
Those who obey are provided a covering of the Holy Spirit. A comforter, teacher, and a testifier of truth.
Gift from God to those who obey.
Given to the disciples at Jesus’ request.
Would come and replace Jesus’ physical presence.
Jesus promised that the counselor would be there forever.
The counselor is like Jesus.
The Holy Spirit brings an intimacy to the relationship with the disciples and the Holy Spirit.
The word “spirit” comes from the Greek word pneuma and means “wind” or “breath”.
The idea of something coming upon you suddenly.
For those who obey and wait on the Lord, we are promised a sudden movement of the Spirit in God’s timing.
We don’t do it to earn God’s favor. We already have His favor. We obey because we are led to out of love and worship. The Holy Spirit leads us to a place of obedience in spirt of our fears and failures.
And then.... He just shows up and does His work through us.
The works of the Holy Spirit within our midst ought (family & church) to be our deepest desire.
